Mel's Favorite Things : A Dora Pie (Berkeley)

I'm pretty excited to talk about A Dora's Pie on University in Downtown Berkeley.

I am not a baker as I happily fall into the creative home cook soup/stew camp. I do admire the precision involved with baking. Pie is iconically American and there is something rustic about the challenges around making the imperfect and perfect hand made crust. The following are my a few recent memorable experiences with pie: apple pie at Cockscomb which had cheddar cheese served on the side (apparently an East Coast thing), an Earl Grey pie from Pie Hole while on trip to Los Angles, banana cream pie from Tartine Bakery, and a recent Chocolate Haupia (Hint: coconut) pie from Ted's Bakery.

Though A Dora Pie does not carry any of the four pies I have mentioned, I did bring their chocolate silk pie to a friend function. It was hearty and well received. The party did go on for 8 hours and yes the pie was completely gone. I have tried their peanut butter pie which leans on the savory side - perhaps not for everyone. I plan on checking out their coconut pie, key lime pie and pear pistachio pie. They serve a selection of local beers with pie as well as other confectionary treats. A whole pie is currently $35 - they are HUGE (and it comes in a hearty Pyrex dish which you can keep or trade in for a cookie). Hint: It is best if you call in to get an idea of their current pie list and to reserve a whole pie.
